How to save yourself money when it comes to web design.

Having worked in the web design field for many years and gaining vast amounts of experience along the way, there are a few important steps that we like to pass on to our clients before getting a website built that will save them money in the long and short term.

1. Have a business plan.

Any good web design company or web designer will want to gather information about your business, your customers, your services, your marketing plans, and your long-term objectives.

Your new website will be tailored to each of these points, and if you don’t know what they are, your website will likely fall short of its potential, resulting in a significant financial loss.

2. Get a written quote.

Make sure to agree on the costs of the website’s development and obtain a detailed estimate. Too many website design companies offer a low price to entice you to work with them, only to double or even triple their price later. In the written proposal, make sure as many details as possible are included.

3. Create a list of must-have features

You may not be absolutely sure what your finished website requires in terms of features, but making a list of must-haves and nice-to-haves will help you keep costs down and inform your web designer about your priorities.

4. Research your competitors.

Look for examples of other websites that either function or are visually presented in a manner that appeals to you. Showing your web designer ideas and inspiration will help you define the scope of your project and educate you on what goes over budget and what is actually very straightforward.

5. Be ready with your written content.

Nothing can blow a budget like creating content or making a slew of changes later on. Having your written content ready to go saves a lot of time in the long run when it comes to tedious modifications that are often beyond the scope of a bid. So, if you want to keep the cost of your website design down, write as much content as you can and save it in word docs that you can send over to your web designer. Make sure you proofread everything and get a second opinion!

6. Sketch out a home page layout.

It can be really handy for a web designer to see a quick sketch of where you’d like things should go. Some of the layout options you’ll want to think about are navigation and menus (across the top or down the left side?) sliding banners, social links, contact information, imagery and text.

Some people might jump on Word or PowerPoint, while others will take out a good old fashioned sheet of paper and a pen and draw it out. Don’t make it too difficult for yourself. It isn’t necessary for it to be perfect, just make sure it’s straightforward and understandable.

7. Need a Shopping Cart?

Are you thinking of having a shopping cart on your website? If that’s the case, you’ll need to think about providing all of that data as well. Make files for each of the photographs and a spreadsheet with the product information.

Take in to consideration the payment gateways you’d like to use i.e. Paypal, Stripe. You’ll need to have a think about your shipping methods, costs and locations as well as providing delivery and returns policies.

As you can see, this will take some time, but keep in mind that the more you do, the more money you’ll save! When we have clients who come in with a website brief that is ready to go with all of the items listed here, the projects move at breakneck speed! Which appeals to us and it makes our customers smile. With a well-planned website, there are few surprises, so costs are kept low and the project is overall better off.

We can’t guarantee that doing everything above will get you a specific amount off your final website price, but we can guarantee that after preparing and researching for your website, you will save money.
